web design

It was nice to start on a new freelance project yesterday. Most of you probably know that working with the same brand colors or guidelines for a single company can feel limiting after a while, especially if you feel like branching out and trying something new.  I’ve been able to work on a lot of behind the scenes web projects and some not so behind the scenes web project with my current company but have missed just sitting down to a blank web page canvas and creating widgets from scratch. A friend and client, Sean, asked me to design a template for his business site and we’ve started sharing comps.  He’s also a programmer which is great because I have we have an opportunity to talk about function and aesthetics which is pretty rare. Generally, people either know one of the other so it’s always nice to work with a client who understands why tiling a single small image to create the entire background of a web page is a better option than tiling an enormous image in the background. During one of our recent chats he mentioned that he wasn’t crazy about one of the navigational featues in my design. After we chatted more specifially about what wasn’t appealing, we discovered that it wasn’t really the feature that was causing problems but rather the dimension of the layout. I’ve since updated the layout and kind of started from scratch in order to create something that would fill the page, graphically, yet would fit within some pretty standard div defitions. Check it out below! I’d love to hear your thoughts!
